John is today Adjunct Professor of Journalism Leadership at Swinburne University, and was a former Associate Editor of the Herald Sun. Before retiring from newspapers in 2011 he had a distinguished career as a reporter and foreign correspondent for over 50 years and is today a best selling author of histories about the men who fought on Gallipoli.

He has won Australia's top award for journalism - The Walkley - twice for his stories. In 2012 he was awarded the Melbourne Press Club's Quill Lifetime Achievement Award.

John has visited Gallipoli seven times. The latest result is 'The Price of Valour-the triumph and tragedy of a Gallipoli hero, Hugo Throssell,VC.'  His two other books are: "Goodbye Cobber, God Bless You" ­ the story of the famous Charge of the Light Horse at The Nek; and "Gallipoli Sniper-The Life of Billy Sing '', the story of Australia's most famous sniper. All are published by Pan Macmillan, Australia.
