Australia Day 2008 in Melbourne
Australia Day 2008 had something for everyone, from activities in the Alexandra and Fitzroy Gardens, to the Flag Raising and People's March in Swanston Street, and the Hottest 100 at Waterfront City in Docklands. The holiday was marked with colourful and fun family celebrations right across Melbourne.

Australian of the Year Awards
The winners of the 2008 Australian of the Year Awards were announced by the prime Minister, the Hon Kevin Rudd, at a televised gala event in Canberra on 25 January 2008. Congratulations to Local Hero Jonathon Welch (Victoria), Young Australian of the Year Casey Stoner (New South Wales), Senior Australian of the Year David Bussau AM (New South Wales)and Australian of the Year Lee Kernaghan OAM (Queensland).

The Honourable Alfred Deakin was Australia's Prime Minister three times from 1903 to 1910. He attended Melbourne Grammar School and the University of Melbourne. He practiced law and was a journalist for the Age newspaper.
