Australia Day in Melbourne will offer families the chance to share the excitement of a vibrant street parade, experience the formalities of a flag raising ceremony, participate in arts, craft and sporting activities and try a diverse range of foods.
In a jam packed day of activities, the morning starts at 8am in Alexandra Gardens with the RACV Big Brekkie providing a range of multicultural food vendors and entertainers. RACV will be giving away ipads for the best recipe posted on the Wall of Recipes at the brekkie. Runners up prizees include a $250 RACV Resorts voucher and a $100 RACV merchandise pack.
Families can then watch the formalities of the official Flag Raising Ceremony in front of the Melbourne Town Hall at 10.30am. The People’s March will follow, providing a kaleidoscope of colour, dance, music and entertainment along Swanston Street. Proudly supported by Australian Unity, the People's March reflects Melbourne’s cultural, musical, sporting and cultural diversity and will include over 2,000 participants.
The RACV Australia Day Picnic and Federation Vehicle Display in Kings Domain Gardens will feature the famous Federation Vehicle Display with more than 450 veteran, vintage and classic vehicles, entertainment including James Morrison, free activities and food stalls.
There will be lots of fun and games, activities, working dog displays, sheep shearing demonstrations, scouts, guides, and entertainment. The Australian Airforce Roulettes will fly over around 2pm.
At Harbour Esplanade Docklands, families can try fishing, enjoy a Great Aussie Sausage Sizzle, the Great Aussie Thong Throwing competition and Darrell Lea Green and Gold tastings.
Other Australia Day activities in Melbourne include two concerts in the Sidney Myer Music Bowl and a colourful fireworks display will conclude the day’s activities at approximately 9.40pm.
