What's on – Australia Day in Victoria

Australia Day is our nation’s largest annual public celebration. We invite all Victorians to Reflect, Respect and Celebrate Australia Day.

Victorians are invited to a range of events to respect, reflect and celebrate Australia Day 2024, including family-friendly activities at Federation Square and the annual Government House Open Day.

Day of reflection

The Victorian Government recognises 26 January represents a day of mourning and reflection for some Victorians and is a challenging time for First Peoples. The Victorian Government is committed to addressing past and ongoing injustices through Treaty and the truth-telling work of the Yoorrook Justice Commission.

Day of celebration

Australia Day 2024 will be marked first by ceremony, with a flag-raising ceremony hosted at Government House and the traditional 21-gun salute hosted at the lower forecourt at the Shrine of Remembrance.

Victorians who work with children have been invited to the flag-raising ceremony at Government House to acknowledge the important work they lead to shape the lives of children in Victoria.

At Federation Square(opens in a new window), an all-day program will commence at 10 am and run late into the night as guests are invited to watch the Australian Open Men's Semi-Final. The day's program includes screenings of Kangaroo Beach with appearances from live characters, vibrant musical acts, workshops and hands-on activities, and free food.

At Government House(opens in a new window), the Open Day will allow guests to explore the grounds and State Apartments, picnic on the Western Lawn, listen to a variety of musical acts, and find out more about community groups such as the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Victoria Police, St John Ambulance Victoria, Country Women’s Association, among others.

In the skies above, a heritage aircraft from The Royal Australian Air Force Heritage Aircraft Fleet will do a flypast, visible from both Government House, Federation Square, and the Shrine of Remembrance.
